A calcaneal spur, also known as a heel spur, is a common orthopedic condition characterized by a bony outgrowth or protrusion that forms on the underside of the heel bone, known as the calcaneus. It typically develops in response to long-term stress or inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. While not everyone with plantar fasciitis, a condition involving inflammation of the plantar fascia, will develop a heel spur, they are often associated. Heel spurs can be quite painful, causing discomfort when walking or standing, especially in the morning or after periods of rest. Treatment options for calcaneal spurs include rest, physical therapy, orthotic devices, and in some cases, surgery to remove the spur. Proper footwear, stretching exercises, and lifestyle modifications can also help alleviate symptoms and prevent their recurrence.
